Binance $6.3bn hack: FBI attributes attack to North Korea; check withdrawal notices
Binance says it has replenished 90% of affected assets. Its reopening target and actual withdrawal availability are separate things to check.
## FBI attributes the attack to North Korea In an announcement dated October 31 in the US, the FBI attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptoassets from Binance to North Korea. Binance estimated losses at about $6.3 billion from an attack around 20:05 UTC on October 29, or 05:05 KST on October 30. ## What does “90% replenished” mean? Binance said on October 31 that it had replenished around 90% of affected assets. This involves obtaining replacement tokens using company resources and other reserves; it does not mean 90% of the stolen assets were recovered from the attackers. The company said it would continue purchasing the remaining assets and absorb the financial impact rather than pass it to users. ## Check the reopening notice and your account Binance set November 1 as its target for reopening withdrawals. The material checked at 08:19 KST on November 1 did not confirm that reopening had been completed. Before using the service, check official notices and withdrawal availability for your asset and network in your account. Replenished reserves alone do not establish that withdrawals are available. ## Verify compensation messages in the official app Rather than immediately following a message link offering compensation or withdrawal unlocking, check the app you normally use or enter the official website address yourself. Keep passwords, authentication codes and wallet recovery phrases private. If someone asks for an upfront payment to unlock withdrawals, do not send it; contact official support.
